This anime is one of the few anime current season that I’ve been keeping an eye on. I first almost dismissed this show as just another boring slice of life series that wasn’t worth watching…However, I’m so glad I didn’t drop this show. In my opinion, unique part about this show is the concept of failure.
Most other anime portray impossible settings where main characters can achieve anything and everything if they just try hard enough. This kind of “Can achieve anything” shows coupled with all that happy go lucky themes gives me shivers.
Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo might at first glance look like one of those shows but it actually isn’t. Best thing about this show is how much of main character’s failures are in this show. No matter how main characters try… they cannot achieve what they want. Just like real life, sometimes even your utmost hardest effort isn’t enough… It is very interesting to see how main characters cope with their repeated failures.
Anyways, here’s the review for this episode.
The Sakurasou group continues to petition to stop the demolition of Sakurasou. Things are looking hopeful. Even some of the students and nearby residents are cheering them on. But apparently they are nowhere close to getting enough signatures they need to stop Sakurasou’s demolition. It was cute to see even Mashiro trying her best by yelling.
We learned last episode that Nanami didn’t pass her audition. She still decided to help get the signatures for the petition. She was trying to forget all the anger and disappointment of not making the auditions by focusing on Sakurasou’s current crisis. However, in this episode she couldn’t hold up all those emotions anymore and some of them leak out in forms of tears. Sorata ends up bringing her to the nurse’s office. Q~Q don’t cry Nanami, you’re still the best girl in this series, and the best actor.
After leaving Nanami in the nurse’s office and walking back to class Sorata gets a bad news himself. Apparently there was another game design that was similar to his but more popular. Sorata’s design wasn’t picked and was dropped. Sorata worked so hard… learning from his failure last time and tried even harder. Trying even harder wasn’t enough. There’s no way to sugarcoat his emotions, he is pissed.
Ryunosuke texts him asking if Nanami is alright. From this text back and forth Sorata realizes that Nanami is not alright. After learning that his design failed, Sorata probably got a better understanding of how Nanami is feeling at the moment. Sorata rushes to Nanami.
Of course Nanami wasn’t in the nurse’s office. She was out in the rain. This is the highlight of this episode in my opinion. Sorata urges Nanami to stop running away from the audition results and let all her feelings out. This scene reminds me of another one of Nanami’s early failures where Nanami let all her anguish out. Entire two years of preparation, she skipped hanging out with friends, worked part-time jobs and practiced endlessly… Yet with a single audition result all the two years of hard work and preparation dismantled into nothing. She deserve to be angry and cry more than anyone else. Again, Sorata was here to listen to everything she had to say.
Honestly, when you are feeling down there’s nothing like letting all your emotions out and sharing them with the person you trust.
Bit of comedic exchange after the serious scene just now. No matter how much it looks like Sorata has hots for Mashiro, I will ship SortataxNanami.
As expected it was impossible for the Sakurasou company to get enough signatures. Although bitter, everyone except Mashiro seems to accept defeat. This is quite expected. Out of everyone, only Mashiro has never experienced failure in their life. Sorata has hard time convincing Mashiro that it’s over.
Another atom bomb was waiting for Sorata when they returned to Sakurasou. People that turned Sorata’s design down still liked Mashiro’s art so they invited Mashiro to be their character designer. Basically meaning Sorata’s common design is garbage compared to Mashiro’s stellar artistic talent. Sorata gets enraged as he should be… no matter how much they try normal people without exceptional talent will always be stomped down. Hard work doesn’t pay off.
Mashiro gets the blunt end of Sorata’s temper. Mashiro asks Sorata if it’s all her fault. Sorata can’t answer though.Mashiro decides that she will at least protect Sakurasou that she loves. If she leaves, the building won’t get torn down. But Mashiro aren’t you forgetting the fact that Sakurasou isn’t Sakurasou without everyone?
